Bringing 1Gbps fiber to four manufacturing plants reads like a procurement line item until you are the one signing the acceptance form. The plants needed the bandwidth to keep up with growing demand, the contracts specified 1Gbps, and Verizon was ready to call each circuit done. I made a validated throughput test, not a lit circuit, the condition of my signature.
What a paper turn-up hides
A carrier turn-up is easy to declare finished on paper. The circuit lights, the handoff exists, the site shows live, and none of that proves it actually moves data at the speed we were paying for. The trouble with accepting a turn-up on that basis is that the gap does not disappear, it moves downstream, surfacing months later as a production problem long after the vendor has moved on and any leverage to make them fix it is gone. The cheapest moment to hold a vendor to what they sold is before you sign, so that is where I put the pressure.
Making the test the gate
No site got accepted until it demonstrated true 1Gbps at turn-up, with the contracted number measured on the spot. Several plants did not reach it on the first pass, [the specific issues: last-mile handoff, misconfigured CPE, throughput shortfalls]. I worked those through Verizon’s support across as many rounds as it took, and because the sign-off was still open, every one of those problems stayed Verizon’s to fix rather than ours to inherit.
What it set
All four plants came onto fiber at the speed the contract promised, verified rather than assumed, and the shortfalls were resolved by the carrier before acceptance instead of by us afterward. It also set a standard I have used on every circuit since: the sign-off condition is the contracted number, measured. Treating that turn-up test as a real gate is a small piece of discipline, and it is the difference between paying for a service and actually getting one.
